The Dixie fire is now the 2nd-largest wildfire in California history, burning more than 463,000 acres through a large swath of Northern California. It has destroyed 400+ homes and commercial buildings as firefighters struggle to get the upper hand.

The wildfire is burning in Plumas, Butte, Lassen and Tehama counties. Cooler weather was slowing the spread of the fire this weekend, but it remained a dangerous monster, and thousands of residents of small mountain communities remained evacuated.

Despite the improved weather conditions, fire crews remained vigilant. While smoke created dismal air quality across the region, it helped to suppress fire activity by keeping temperatures down, humidity slightly higher and wind speeds a bit lower.

Four firefighters were injured when a tree branch fell on them on Saturday, according to officials. Three were treated and released, and one remained hospitalized in stable condition.

No deaths have been reported so far in the Dixie fire, but some residents are taking risks that alarm authorities. Evacuation orders are in place for thousands of residents whose communities were under siege, yet some are choosing to stay behind.
