Dominic Thiem have emerged the 2020 US Open men's singles champions after a historic comeback from two sets down to beat Alexander Zverev 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (8/6).

The 27-year-old ensured he won his first Grand Slam title early Monday morning in a breathtaking five-setter that saw him overpower the fifth seed in four hours and two minutes at the Arthur Ashe stadium.

Thiem was the losing finalist at the Australian Open earlier in the year and also lost in the last-two Grand Slams at the French Open in 2018 and 2019.

The Austrian becomes the first new Grand Slam champion since Croatian Marin Cilic won the US Open in 2014. He also becomes the first Grand Slam champion other than Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal or Roger Federer since Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka won the third of his majors at the 2016 US Open.

This year's final marked the first time in the US Open’s era history that a player had recovered from losing the opening two sets to win the title and was also the first time, the final was settled by a tie-break.

Speaking after the victory, Thiem said, “I achieved a life goal, a dream of myself, which I had for many, many years. I dedicated basically my whole life until this point to win one of the four majors. Now I did it. That's also for myself a great accomplishment."

He added, "I mean, it's by far not only myself, it's an accomplishment from all my team, from all my family. I guess also today is the day where I gave back a huge amount of what they did for me."

Thiem is the first man born in the 1990s to win a Grand Slam singles title and now becomes Austria's second Grand Slam champion, following Thomas Muster's title win at the 1995 French Open

23-year-old Zverev, who burst into tears during his speech said, “It was a tough battle. I wish you would have missed a little bit more so I could have hold that trophy up. “I don’t think it’s my last chance. I do believe that I will be a Grand Slam champion

at some point,” he added
