The wife of the popular Mexican drug lord Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera. Emma Coronel Aispuro has pleaded guilty to charges related to helping run her husband’s billion-dollar Sinaloa drug cartel as part of a deal with U.S. prosecutors.

Coronel Aispuro, a dual citizen of Mexico and the U.S., pleaded guilty in court on thursday for conspiring to distribute drugs, launder money and swap money with drug traffickers.

Coronel Aispuro “aided and abetted” her husband’s drug cartel and said she served as “a go-between” for Guzmán and his cartel associates after he was jailed in 2014. She also helped plan her husband’s high-profile escape from a Mexican jail in 2015 and that she was assisting in coordinating another jailbreak before Guzmán was extradited to the U.S. in 2017.

Although, She previously denied having any role in her husband’s illicit activities. But her attorney insist the plead bargain is the best decision to make in this regard. The attorney further explains that as it will make Coronel Aispuro their client “feels at ease about whatever the decision of the court is,” and that the plea will allow her to “move on with her life” and “put everything behind her.”

With her decision, she faces a lighter sentence which might be less than ten years.
