Nigeria transited from analogue to digital television viewing on April 30, 2016 in the city of Jos, the Plateau State Capital when it launched the pilot phase of the Federal Government’s digital transmission project that kick started the digitisation process in Nigeria. Digitisation is the process of converting analogue signals or information from any format into digital forms that can be understood by computer systems or electronic devices.

The term is used when converting information like text, images or voices and sounds into binary codes. Digitised information is easier to store, access and transmit and digitisation is used by a number of Consumer electronic devices. But the pilot phase launched years back is only available to a state and some other areas in the middle belt.  While the general digitalization process couldn't be achieved until now

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed now assured that no state will be left out of the Digital Switch Over (DSO) – the transition from analogue to digital broadcasting. The minister gave the assurance on Thursday in Abuja at the unveiling of the timetable for the rollout of the DSO across the country.

Alhaji Lai Mohammed who is the Chairman of the Ministerial Task Force overseeing the successful completion of the project said a time-table had been approved for the first phase of the rollout as well as the analogue switch off. “Before we embark on the analogue switch-off in any state, we will ensure that the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) signal has covered at least 70 per cent of the population in that state.

Although he warned some hilly part or states in the country will definitely be experiencing a cut back of the digitalization process as the starts, places like the FCT, and some other part of the country might not be immediately be included in the switch over process, but arrangements has been made to include them as time passes by.
