On an interview via twitter, Japheth Omojuwa gives his insight on election funding and how Nigerian politician are capitalizing on the impoverish states of its citizen to win political offices and in retrospect sending the populace back into unending penury.

The soft spoken twitter sensation enumerated the pro and cons of election funding in Nigeria and how it has trickled into legalized vote buying system, he further insists that a redesign is necessary to tackle the menacing effect of vote buying in the election space.

Personally, this topic of election funding has been on my thought for awhile and watching him talk about it makes it more frightening and seriously perceived as a destructive menace in our political space.

The Nigerian politicians seems to have deduced that weaponizing poverty is the sure route to actualizing their political ambitions and continually capitalized on it during the election period.

In his analysis, he made a point with the election funding and how any politician seek to earn double of his spending upon getting into office. This is a means by which poverty is kept ion the increase and eventually weaponized it to the benefits of the this wealthy politicians.

What should be done;

If we continually clamor for more responsive governance , it’s about time we seek to do away with the anomalies enshrine in the system, the general populace have a huge task on their hands. The rich politicians wouldn’t mind in as much as their mission is accomplished even at the expense of whatever is.

Another mitigating factor that needs to be tackle and crash is the practices of vote buying; the government and general populace needs to come together in criminalizing such practices.

Also, election funding in Nigeria needs to be regulated to tackle this menace too, if government can proscribe a moderate financial expenses for public office seekers and continually monitor it, there’s a chance.

The general populace also needs to be sanitized on seeking financial help during elections, vote grants election bonuses and all other goodies available for voters during elections wouldn’t help in moving the country forward because a person that sold his vote cannot hold erring politician for his actions or inactions.

There’s a need for a self introspection for NIGERIAN voters and come 2023, holding politicians accountable will become a responsive restructuring electioneering policy.
