Rio ferdinand the former England defender have task footballers and other sport enthusiast to put in an effort to task social media company to fight against online abuse. He said on his Twitter handle on Friday. In his words;

English football, alongside other sports, organisations and individuals, will switch off social media accounts from 3pm today until 11.59pm on Monday 3 May. Social media companies must do more to #StopOnlineAbuse. Join me and switch off too, as we collectively demand change. Soon enough, enthusiastic sport fans have started suggesting things to do sto stop the online abuse, here are some suggestions.

Start using verification systems like where you sign up to gambling websites etc. It’s the only way it’ll stop....Great idea, give more personal information to services notorious for mishandling private data...You don't have to give your details to twitter for you to be traceable. The police can still find out who people are if they want to...

It’s too easy to just set up loads of new social media pages though that’s the point. You can’t have 10 different accounts with William Hill...Yeah, true. If these people were prosecuted more often that'd stop many of them in their tracks though, and that can be done without giving twitter your ID details.

All these and many more are the suggestion given to social media companies as ways to curb SM abuse
