As many as 50,000 Afghan refugees are expected to arrive in the U.S. as evacuations out of Kabul speed up. Most evacuees are at risk of persecution by the Taliban for working with foreign forces in Afghanistan. Others include diplomats, women leaders, journalists and people from high-risk groups.

Cities around the U.S. are preparing to help resettle as many as 50,000 Afghan refugees as evacuations out of Kabul pick up pace. The Biden administration has asked U.S. refugee programs to prepare to resettle the refugees to be admitted under “humanitarian parole.” The effort is to give soft landing to Afghan faithful to the American ideology.

The U.S. admitted more than 300,000 Vietnamese after the Vietnam War in 1975. Analysts say there is little chance the U.S. will repeat the extensive refugee resettlement effort with Afghans.
