The 2021 elections of Ohanaeze Ndigbo to determined a new leadership circle, some leaders and members of the apex Igbo group are divided over the venue, and emergence of Professor George Obiozor as consensus president-general candidate. The announcement of the professor didn't go down well with some meme era who claimed the venue, dates and all other processional arrangement made in respect of the emergence of a new leadership was designed to favor and support some sects of the associations leadership ambitions.
There was an issue with the Ohanaeze Ime-Obi’s approval of the application of Imo State to host the election and adoption of Obiozor as consensus candidate by some Imo State stakeholders. As the state producing the president-general, some leaders said Imo State should not host the election more so as the state government was part of Obiozor’s endorsement.
The development has further created a gap in the unity and consistent agreement with the said foremost Igbo congregation in nigeria. In light of the coming consensus, meme res express their displeasure on why the foremost candidates for the associations leadership and subsequent venue was designed to favor a candidate who is from the same state where the elections are meant to hold.
Speaking on the latest development on the associations leadership tussle, the former presidential candidate and member of the Ohanaeze Ime-Obi, Chief Chekwas Okorie, had insist Imo could host the election. In His words he posited that: “It is very much in order for Imo State to apply to host the January 11, 2021 election of Ohanaeze Executive Committee.
The Ime-Obi is the highest and most powerful policy-making organ of the organisation, in an unopposed decision, approved the request of the Imo State Chapter of Ohanaeze to host the event. It will be recalled that the election of the outgoing Ohanaeze leadership led by Chief Nnia Nwodo from Enugu State was held in Enugu.
