Some stories breaking in the Nigerian scene lately suggests all aspect of the country gives a joke for self mockery of the Nigerian state as a whole. For a retired general to categorically states in his memoir that late Gen. Sanni Abacha was not a corrupt leader. The leader in reference still get the country scampering for his overseas starched loots is still unrecovered even 18yrs after his death is a pointer to his legendary greed
A former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Ishaya Bamaiyi (retd.), said his late boss, General Sani Abacha, did not loot the country’s treasury. He said stories of Abacha’s loot were a creation of the media.
Bamaiyi stated this while speaking at the launching of a tell-all memoir, “Vindication of a General,” which covers his military career, in Abuja on Thursday, Daily Post reported. He said, “I am not defending Abacha; I am not saying things did not go wrong. What I know is that we sat down and agreed that the monies should be kept in a place so that we can have access to them. I don’t know if something else happened after that period.”
Bamaiyi’s account of Abacha’s handling of Nigeria’s treasury during his regime, which lasted between November 17, 1993 and June 8, 1998, contradicts an estimate that shows Abacha channeled up to $2.2bn from the Central Bank of Nigeria into his private accounts.
On March 8, 2016, Nigeria and Switzerland entered into an agreement, which would see the European nation return $321m funds stolen by the former military head of state.
Bamaiyi further said that President Muhammadu Buhari was an insider in the Abacha government, adding that it accounts for the reason foreign countries do not want to listen to him concerning the country’s money lodged in foreign bank accounts.
He said, “If you remember, we had problems in Sierra-Leone and Liberia under the Abacha government and it was the money realised under Abacha regime that we used to buy weapons and ammunition to help them fight. That is why I said Abacha loot is a media creation.”
Believe it or not, this is something to laugh about as it’s very difficult to believe his assertions, but bamaiyi has a reason for stating this in his book and his reasons is not known to anybody.
