The Mars Odyssey orbiter is a robotic spacecraft circling Mars that uses a thermal imager to detect evidence of water and ice on the planet. It was launched in 2001, making it the longest-working Mars spacecraft in history. Last year, NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter celebrated its 15th anniversary. In the time since it had left earth, the orbiter captured almost 7 million pictures of the red planet. Here are some highlights from its massive portfolio of photos.

There's an evidence of impact with an asteroid in the middle of the sea, but it's not evident if the asteroid contained enough water to carry it to mars. Although, from the colors it seems more of a color than when the sulfur explodes. The photo captures a sea of dunes and wind-sculpted lines surrounding the red planet's frosty northern polar cap. The shot represents an area that is 19 miles wide, NASA said. But the sea of dunes actually covers an area as large as Texas.

The photo is a false color image, meaning that the colors are representative of temperatures. Blue represents cooler climes, and the shades of yellow mark out "sun-warmed dunes," but the orbiter was launched in 2001 and is 20 years old, obviously, cameras have made improvements since then, unlike the rovers on Mars's surface, the orbiter is in Mars's orbit. Asking a close-up picture of the surface is like asking people on the ISS to take them.

These are the information Musk is banking on to live on Mars in the nearest future
