New Zealand will move into a snap lockdown after the first COVID-19 case in six months was recorded in the country's most populous city, Auckland,

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Tuesday. The lockdown will last seven days in Auckland and the Coromandel regions, and at least three days for the rest of the country. "We have seen what can happen elsewhere if we fail to get on top of it. We only get one chance," Ardern said in a televised press conference.

Auckland will move into a seven-day lockdown while the rest of the country enters a three-day lockdown. Reasons to leave home include shopping for essential goods, obtaining medical care, getting tested and physical exercise within the neighbourhood.

The lockdown willstart from 11.59pm today Tuesday 17 August, all of NZ will move to Alert Level 4. This measure will remain in place for 3 days from 11:59pm tonight for all of NZ, with the exception of Auckland & the Coromandel Peninsular, with both staying in Level 4 likely for the next 7 days.
